Teaching Multi-Level Classes

What is a Multi-level ESL class?

Multi-level classrooms are as varied as the students in them. Most often, they include students who communicate in English at a variety of different levels. They may also be considered multi-level because they include students with different types of learning backgrounds, such as those who have learned orally and those who have learned mainly from a textbook. Students may also have different levels of literacy in their own native language. A classroom that contains some students who are familiar with the Roman alphabet and some students who are not may also be considered multi-level. Finally, the term multi-level can be used to refer to a group of students working together who range greatly in age.

Lets know more about the Advantages and Challenges of Teaching Multi-level Classes....

Teacher Taboos

As a teacher of ESL there is a fine balance between being yourself and showing respect. If your students are learning English in your country, you want to share as much as you can about your own customs and lifestyle, while giving each of your students the opportunity and freedom to share theirs. If you are teaching English in a foreign country, you should take active steps to learn as much about the culture and customs of its people. This includes finding out about the taboo topics and actions that could embarrass, confuse or upset a student.

Remember, that what is considered appropriate conduct or conversational material in your country may be considered rude, insulting or even bad luck in another. You may also find that younger generations are more accepting of and accustomed to American or European topics and gestures, while older students still consider some things taboo.

Fact&opnion

Can you recognize Fact From opinion?

I set down two different paragraph in this division that it will specify the difference between fact and opinion...

1.Stress is arguably one of the most serious modern diseases. According to a survey carried out by the Institute of Management, approximately 270,00 UK workers take time off work very year because of work related stress, at a cost to the nation in sick pay, lost production and medical bills of about $7 billion.

2.Experts have often suggested stress is the less of a problem for bosses than for their subordinates and this view is confirmed by the survey, which found that only nine per cent of junior managers looked forward to going to work. Furthermore only seven per cent felt they were in control of their jobs.

Can U Recognize them?

I will tell you at the next parts...

Adverbial clauses

An adverb clause is a dependent clause that functions as an adverb. In other words, it contains a subject (explicit or implied) and a predicate, and it modifies a verb.

I saw Joe when I went to the store. (explicit subject 2)
He sat quietly in order to appear polite. (implied subject he)

According to Sidney Greenbaum and Randolph Quirk, adverbial clauses function mainly as adjuncts or disjuncts. In these functions they are like adverbial phrases, but due to their potentiality for greater explicitness, they are more often like prepositional phrases (Greenbaum and Quirk,1990):

We left after the speeches ended. (adverbial clause)
We left after the end of the speeches. (adverbial prepositional phrase)

Contrast adverbial clauses with adverbial phrases, which do not contain a clause.

I like to fly kites for fun.

Adverbial clauses modify verbs, adjectives or other adverbs. For example:

Hardly had I reached the station when the train started to leave the platform.

The adverbial clause in this sentence is "when the train started to leave the platform" because it is a subordinate clause and because it has the trigger word (subordinate conjunction) "when".

lets know more about the different types of adverbial clauses...

? How to Recognize Verbs & Verb Strings

In English grammar, there are eight parts of speech that make up sentences, verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions and interjections.
