Literature Review

Nicholas Walliman(2011) states that “the most important reason for doing research is to produce new knowledge and understanding, and to disseminate it to make it available to everyone.”  When planning  to do research,  you need to be informed of  the current state of knowledge on your subject  of interest since  it seems a waste of time to spend months producing knowledge that is already available. Then, one of the first steps in planning a research project is to do a literature review.

A literature review, as a description of the theoretical and practical background on a research topic, provides the reader (and the researcher) with an overview of issues, authorities, previous studies, and history of  that field or topic. A literature review is not in itself  a research project, rather, it is a report on a relevant investigations of that topic, telling the history of that study. According to H. Cooper (1988), a literature review … “seeks to describe, summarize, evaluate, clarify and/or integrate the content of primary reports.”( p. 104).

A review of related literature may be purely descriptive, as in an annotated bibliography, or it may provide a critical assessment of the literature in a particular field, stating where the weaknesses and gaps are, contrasting the views of particular authors, or raising questions.

Quite related to literature review is theAnnotated Bibliography as someinstructors demand an annotated bibliography in addition or prior to writing your literature review. It is advisable to prepare such a bibliography, especially when writing a proposal, since an annotated bibliography gives a descriptive and evaluative account of the sources (books, articles, etc.) on your research topic and such an initial appraisal of the sources will help the researcher in both finding the more relevant documents and preparing them for better conducting the study at latter stages.
